Sound Dust Modular Chaos Engine 4 KONTAKT

Sound Dust Modular Chaos Engine 4 KONTAKT
A kit of lovely, dusty, binaurally recorded acoustic drum samples and slightly prepared steel drums….a kind of Tom Waits percussion machine featuring drums in all shapes and sizes.
There are huge flappy marching band bass drums, ripped and rattly snares and kicks, frame drums, congas, bongos, toms, hi-hats, cymbals, boxes, broken metal shelving…

Plus the "prepared” steel drums. These are a neglected set of bass and cello steel pans played with fingers and soft mallets to avoid sounding like proper steel drums (more apocalypse than calypso), the tunings are a bit iffy, but there are plenty of velocity layers per hit for a rusty hang drum like effect.

A chaotic drum device for a chaotic world

It's probably fairly obvious by the blueness and the title that this machine is based on the strange and rather wonderful analog/digital masterpiece that is Dave Smiths' Evolver. I LOVE this synth, in a sterile world it oozes personality. Modular Chaos Engine#2.1 takes hundreds of sounds from this beast and moulds them into a highly interactive and serendipitous 'drum' device that can help you quickly create new and unexpected beats, breaks and rhythms that you just didn't know you had in you.

This Chaos Engine has up to 120 different sounds/articulations per sequence node which are very loosely mapped across the keys from from low kick drum type sounds through snappy snare type sounds up to more clicky, rattly hats and then the mildly melodic sounds up near the top end of the key range.

This is a magical sounding impossible hybrid instrument that takes the rare and beautiful woody jingle of the dulcitone and transforms it into an extended dusty swoon that goes to infinity and beyond (although technically that's not really possible is it ?)

If Tim Burton was a musical instrument he would make sounds like the Ghost Dulcitone 1900.
The starting point of Ghost Dulcitone 1900 is sister instrument the dULCITONE 1900 a 100 year old acoustic keyboard which is binaurally multisampled with 7 velocity layers. Then each sample is used as a convolution reverb impulse and 20 second bursts of Moog Voyager generated analogue white noise are blasted through it to create a whole new sample set of dusty, metallic bowed sounding, infinite duclitone-iness.

Features include:
6 deeply multisampled sound articulations ; Pale Ghost convolution, Reverse Ghost convolution, Dark Ghost convolution, Dulcitone 1900, Roomy Nord and Release Nord.
3.26GB of 24bit multisamples with up to 14 velocity levels per note.
Advanced architecture with automatable control of everything.
Sample start control.
Patch morphing with mod wheel controller
3 pages of scripting.
Ghost Engine with per voice algorithmic reverb.
Noise Engine with per voice distortion and filtering.
74 specially created convolution reverb impulses recorded from real spaces, expensive hardware, and some less obvious sources including a Roland Space Echo, Lexicon reverb and the stage of Glyndebourne Opera House.
Leslie effect, cabinet modelling and morphing EQ.
Selectable and adjustable release group.
Selectable round robin sample swapping.
Midi timing jitter.
51 instruments (.nki's).

ships piano + school grand + deviously altered upright x kontakt scripting = a very nice piano indeed.

Ships Piano³ takes the original acclaimed Sound Dust Ships Piano sample instrument and adds two more really great sounding character pianos to the mix.

Think of her as a character piano modeller, you can cunningly combine different aspects of each piano to create impossible sounding piano hybrids. Just don't expect the usual bland, silky smooth tones of those other over sampled piano monsters.

The fun doesn't stop there though, Ships Piano³ isn't just a pretty face.

She also comes with the Satie-anator sequencer engine which combined with the keyswitch operated scale and key commands is a full on inspiration machine!

School Grand - a binaurally recorded grand piano in an ancient stone walled Hogwartsy school hall/chapel
Ships Piano - 4 or 5 notes of velocity, recorded binaurally and re-tuned since the last version - see box for her history
Room Upright - binaurally recorded with 3 layers of velocity, the cunning bit is that she was reversed, fed through high end reverb and then reversed again
Individual controls for volume, sample start, pan, stereo width, attack curve, ADSR, vibato and reverb send per piano
346 24bit samples = 360mb with Native Instruments propriety compression
24 custom convolution reverbs per piano
Satie-anator - 12 user programmable, key triggered sequencers with 12 tracks per sequence
Scale and pitch quantisers with keyswitch control
Master FX page - master EQ, tape and valve modelling plus transient designer
Keyboard Velocity modelling page
37 instrument snapshots
Handy build in instructions in RTFM page

A chaotic drum machine for a chaotic world.

For the past 10 years or so I've always carried some kind of portable recording device and a pair of OKM in ear microphones around with me and kept a kind of aural diary of great sounding things and great sounding places. I've made literally gazillions of recordings in places all over this side of the world, and like most diaries these recordings have mainly been sitting in dark cupboards waiting for someone to rediscover them..

The Modular Chaos Engine is the perfect repository for 785 of them. I've selected the most usefully percussive, clangy, bangy, thumpy, boomy, itchy, scratchy, thwacky and whacky, added a really powerful sequencing engine and made a "found sound" drum machine.
