A Rare Rhythm Box Sampled Through an SP-1200

"It's big and from the 70s" is the most information you can find about the Rhythm 700, also known as the TR 700. It's a rare, 3ft tall analog rhythm box that doubles quite nicely as a piece of vintage studio furniture.

Created by Roland in 1972, (the same year the company was founded), the rhythm represents one of Roland's very first products. The company's founder, Ikutaro Kakehashi, had originally built rhythm boxes as organ accompaniments in the 1960s with his company Ace Electronic Industries, (Ace Tone). The sound was unbeatable - early 70s analog drums, with airy hi hats, a punchy snare and the snappy analog percussion you might find on an old Suicide or Brian Eno record. It's older and a bit grittier (there is some noise) than its late 70s siblings the CR-68 and CR-78.

Classic 12bit 80s Drum Machine Percussion
Developed in 1985, the 727 is the latin percussion version of the 707 and is the perfect add-on to any drum machine or sample collection. Like the other TR series, it has defined various genres of dance music with its instantly nostalgic congas, agogos, bongos, timbales, cabasas, whistles & more. You can find it all over early Detroit techno, 80s disco / garage, Chicago house, Aphex, Vibert, a Bushwick bodega and more.

But this is no ordinary 727 - in fact, it's easily the most comprehensive 727 pack in existence, as every drum has been analog - pitched 30 times on a mastering tape machine. So in addition to the normal, un-processed sounds, you'll get crazy, tape-tuned percussion. A must have for fans of retro drum machine percussion.

The Classic Analog Rhythm Machine

The CR-78 is the god of rhythm boxes, and has been used by everyone from Phil Collins to Blondie, Jimmy Edgar to Todd Terje, (and too many 90s Techno tracks to count). Metallic percussion, warm analog kicks, crisp 808-ish snares, and some of the smoothest hi hats of all time.

Many of the CR-78 samples out there are lacking in sound quality, and it's rare to even find 24bit versions. A low quality sample is an uphill battle. So, to create this pack, I processed the machine through a 100% analog, class A signal path, straight to tape, and through an extremely accurate converter.

What You Get

•125 Royalty Free 24bit WAVs
•OH, CH, pitched kicks, Snare, Conga, various perc
•Recorded to Tape; 100% Analog signal path
•Re-pitched on Tape: multiple tunings for each hit

The Recording Process

The CR-78 was recorded through an SSL 4000 G+ Console (This is a massive, amazing sounding analog board used on countless records from the 80s - present. For drum processing, it is a beast). The sounds are shaped by the channel EQ, filter, gate and compressor, and final hit an Otari MTR-12 1/4" reel to reel.

An 80s Analog Drum Machine Modded for Deep Bass
The 606 is an analog drum machine from 1982, originally built to accompany the TB-303. The original drum machine's sound is similar to an 808 (perhaps a little more unique) and can be heard all over early Plastikman, Aphex, Autechre and more.

But we've sampled a modded 606, which adds a huge bass boost to the original tom, transforming it into a monstrous booming sub kick that sounds like a cross between an 808 and 909. We also get tuned kicks & hi toms, pitched snares, uniquely metallic hi hats and trashy cymbals, none of which you'll find in any other 606 samples. This thing sounds so fresh!

The Original TB-303 Transformed Through Tubes & Tape
The goal of this project was to record the TB-303 better and more creatively than anybody else has. To provide devastating acid patches, but also to use the 303's waveforms as a basis for completely re-imagining and expanding upon this awesome sound.

You'll get square and saw wave acid bass warmed by tubes and enriched with harmonic distortion, spacey organs, dreamy polyphony, subs fatter than the actual 303 and weirdo FX. Everything has been fully mapped with intricate FX processing, and ready for Ableton, Kontakt & Logic.

The Raw TB-303 Tape Loops Will Give You the Most Authentic Sound

While the synths will give you the greatest options compositionally and creatively, you'll get closest to the actual 303 experience with the tape loops. We intricately programmed the 303 and recorded a bunch of modulating grooves, hitting a reel to reel tape machine, vintage space echo, and the REDDI (the greatest tube bass DI of all time?). Then, we chopped the loops and created midi tracks to trigger them - free for you to re-arrange and retune at will. Plus, you get 16 gritty hardware drum sounds created with the SP-1200 and MPC 4000 (also recorded to tape).

Recording the Original Rhythm 700

We played the patterns, turning up and down faders and recording all of the isolated hits cleanly through an API preamp and SSL gate to tape. The original kickdrum is punchy, but very high pitched, so in addition to recording it naturally, we applied further processing. By recording it to tape and playing it back at extremely slow speeds, we achieved much deeper bass drums. By inserting a Moog lowpass filter after the tape machine we captured all of the attack frequencies, while filtering the sustain, achieving a darker, more 808ish result. Then, we inserted a valley people dyna-mite gate, adding a punchy, analog click to each kick.

One the hits were recorded, we also grabbed full audio loops of each of the original patterns of the machine, with and without the kick drum. These patterns are great for adding momentum to tracks, especially in combination with the single hits. The Rex2 files are ready to be dragged into most DAWs, fully tempo synced.

This is a truly unique release - we took a tiny little drum machine (with a big sound), sequenced it with FX and looped the results through a Roland Scooper, where the sounds were live-warped, bit crushed, reversed, pitched, re-quantized and filtered. All of this was captured on 1/4" tape and transformed into a killer library of modern & weird (but highly useable) sounds and instruments.

The result: clubby kicks, modern claps, punchy snaps, cosmic toms, synthy hi hats, Villalobos-style perc and tons of wonky FX hit. Clean one shots, dirty lo-fi drum kits, and fully tweakable chromatic keyboard instruments for Ableton, Kontakt, Logic, WAV & more.
